Home, Sophia Kaplan from Leaf Supply
Tell us about your ‘usual’ day…
My kid usually comes in for some morning cuddles. It’s a pretty nice way to start the day. From there every day is so different. If he’s with me we’ll usually hang out at home, pottering around the house or garden before meeting a friend for brunch or a visit to a park. While he naps I try and catch up on emails or get the house in order, it’s a pretty sweet little domestic existence. If I’ve got the day to myself I might be heading to the flower market at 4:30am for a flower job, or dropping into the Leaf Supply studio to check in or organise any special projects. Or I might be heading out to the nurseries to source plants, or doing some writing and shooting for our next indoor plant book. I really like the variety of my life!
What is the most satisfying part of your job/s?
I love visiting the flower market and the nurseries. The joy of discovering all the beautiful flowers and plants that have been so carefully cultivated by our lovely growers is such a pleasure.
What gives you the most energy/feeling of being alive?
Being in nature, whether it’s our little garden, a nice local park or a trip out to the countryside, it really soothes the soul and makes me a happy lady.
What does the word ‘home’ mean to you?
I am so lucky to have a cosy, safe space where I can raise my family. A home is hopefully all of this and a reflection of the things we love and our history.
When people come into your home what do you want them to feel and why?
I want my guests to feel totally at ease. They should treat my place as their own. We had a bit of an open door policy when we lived in an apartment building with lots of our friends, and I loved that, that our friends could come and go as they pleased and home felt like a bit of a commune rather than a fort.
Do you feel like your working life and home life are seperate or intertwined?
Definitely intertwined. I work mostly from home, and sadly for my poor partner and kid am often on my phone checking in on my businesses!
How would you describe your home interiors style/ taste?
We love mid-century, and I would like to say we have a more minimal approach, but despite my best efforts, things are a bit more cluttered than I’d like. We’ve kept colours and materials relatively natural, with lots of wood, linen and some precious pieces, including ceramics and paintings made by friends and family.
What is your favourite space/feature in the house and why?
I love that fact that we are surrounded by trees. From all of the windows you can see green, hear the birds, and feel the calming effect of nature.
What are you most looking forward to doing in and around your home this year?
I’m slowly working away on our garden, a never ending project no doubt, but I am looking forward to watching my little seedings and saplings burst forth, and to be able to harvest more from our vegetable patch.
Do you think it’s important to be intentional about the spaces we create for ourselves and why?
Your home should be an intentional, thoughtful space. It should be practical and comfortable and a natural reflection of your own style, without being too fussy. It’s good to surround yourself with things that you love, but make sure they have history and intention and that you’re not consuming just for the sake of it.
